Life in the Dorms

So, I will be honest, the biggest thing I was worried about when coming to Saint Michael's (or any college for that matter) was living in the dorms. I had heard some horror stories and needless to say, I was scared out of my mind. I mean, I had never had to share a room with anyone before, let alone a bathroom. So I am here today to clear up some questions about the dorms here at SMC and to give you a little info on what it is like to call these buildings your home.
As a first year, there are 3 possible dorms that you can stay in: Lyons, Ryan and Joyce. Joyce and Ryan are side-by-side while Lyons is across the first year quad next to Alumni (a sophomore dorm). They are separated in to North and South wings and by floor. The place that I am currently calling home right now is Lyons 4th floor north.

I can honestly say that I couldn't be happier about where I am living. My floor is amazing. We have Pretty Little Liars, Dance Moms and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo marathons, we sit in the hallway and talk all day and we are always laughing. My floor is my family. There are 19 girls on the floor and 1 RA (hopefully I did my math correctly). We all have so much fun together. We eat together, we have classes together, we study together and 5 of us are even (attempting) to play Rugby together (I will let you know how that goes in a blog later on!). The week leading up to moving into the dorms, I was really nervous. I was scared that the girls wouldn't be nice or that we would all be so different from each other. I was right on one thing. We are all different, but that is what makes our hall so much fun. We all come from different backgrounds and lifestyles and we all have different stories to tell. I think that is what makes us all so close.

Now, you may have a few questions. So I will answer the ones that I had before coming to SMC.
1: How many showers/toilets/sinks are there? Well there are 3 showers, 3 toilets and 5 sinks. We also have a handicapped shower on our floor which adds one of each of those things.
2: Are the dorms air conditioned? NO. Let me tell you, for the first week I thought I was going to melt right into the floor. It was so hot. I suggest bringing a fan (or 2) and lots of shorts and tshirts. Don't think that "hey its Vermont, it's cold." Nope. You are dead wrong.
3: What is the safety like in the dorms? All the dorms are locked 24/7. When you get on campus you receive your Knight Card. DON'T LOSE IT. That is your access key to all the dorm buildings. You will also get your own personal room key. Do not lose that either! Also when you leave your room, always make sure to either leave your door unlocked, prop it open, or take your key. There is nothing worse than going to take a shower and ending up getting locked out of your room. All the hallways are pretty safe. I have yet to have a problem in my dorm. I mean, it could be because I am all the way on the 4th floor and who the heck wants to walk up all those stairs, right?

At SMC, you are guaranteed housing all 4 years. Which is AWESOME. And I mean, it is probably the greatest college experience you will ever have. Also, who would want to pass up this beautiful view?

About Me

Hey there everyone! My name is Susanna and I am a current freshman at the wonderful Saint Michael's College. I am 18 years old and I am from the small(ish) town of Shelton, CT.  This year, I am living in one of the freshman dorms called Lyons. (#L4Nswag). I could not have asked for a better place to live!
As of now, I am a declared Business major with the hopes of either double majoring or minoring in Theatre. I would love if one day I could work as a producer or casting agent on Broadway! This year I hope to be involved in many things in our SMC community. I hope to some day become a tour guide as well as get involved in Drama club and participate in MOVE activities.
This blog right here that you are currently looking through, will hopefully give you a little insight as to what being a student at SMC is all about! I hope to give you views and perspectives on everything from dorm living, to activities and events and then from there to the great towns that surround us!

      Go ahead, look around!
     Susanna :)
